  • US: 11-year-old trans girl says Obama should have mentioned trans people at his inauguration

Sadie wrote her letter in response to Obama’s inauguration speech (Image: Transgriot)although she commended President Obama’s speech for including gay people, she thought he should have included the trans community as well because “transgender people have the same hopes and dreams as everyone else”Speaking at his inauguration on Monday, President Barack Obama made a speech which said “our journey is not complete” until equal rights for gay people are acheived, and referred to the importance of the Stonewall riots in terms of moves towards equality. Sadie’s mother said: “Sadie was so proud of President Obama for including the gay community in his inaugural address on Monday; however, she felt like the trans community wasn’t included. That inspired her to write her own ‘speech.’”

She went on to say that she ”isn’t shy or ashamed of who she is.” Her mother said that Sadie socially transitioned at kindergarten age, and now she is in the fifth grade, it is her first year at public school, after being homeschooled, reports Gay Community News.

Sophie’s full speech, which originally appeared on Transgriot, is available to read below.

The world would be a better place if everyone had the right to be themselves, including people who have a creative gender identity and expression. Transgender people are not allowed the freedom to do things everyone else does, like go to the doctor, go to school, get a job, and even make friends.

Transgender kids like me are not allowed to go to most schools because the teachers think we are different from everyone else. The schools get afraid of how they will talk with the other kids’ parents, and transgender kids are kept secret or told not to come there anymore. Kids are told not to be friends with transgender kids, which makes us very lonely and sad.

When they grow up, transgender adults have a hard time getting a job because the boss thinks the customers will be scared away. Doctors are afraid of treating transgender patients because they don’t know how to take care of them, and some doctors don’t really want to help them. Transgender patients like me travel to other states to see a good doctor.

It would be a better world if everyone knew that transgender people have the same hopes and dreams as everyone else. We like to make friends and want to go to school. Transgender people want to get good jobs and go to doctors like they are exactly the same. It really isn’t that hard to like transgender people because we are like everyone else.”

[image: from deviantART sta.sh writer. text:  I love her so fuckin’ much that it hurts sometimes. I want to protect her, keep her safe, show her that love isn’t as bad as it’s been for her at times. Yet, I don’t want to ruin the friendship that we have. I’ll push my feelings to the side, continue to be her friend, even though it hurts. All I want is to see that beautiful smile on her face and hear her laughter. I don’t want anything else but for her to always, always be smiling and happy.

This photo of service members with their same-sex partners at the Inaugural Ball is making me teary for reasons I can’t explain. Maybe because this was the first inauguration since we repealed Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Maybe because these brave individuals finally got to celebrate a historic moment with the person they love. • BREAKING: Rhode Island House passes marriage equality

    gaywrites:

The House of Representatives in Rhode Island approved a bill that would legalize marriage equality. Next up it will face the Senate, but that’s not necessarily a sure thing:

Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed personally opposes marriage equality, but she has committed to allow a Senate committee to consider the House’s bill and then for it to head to the full Senate should the committee lend its support. The Senate Judiciary Committee is chaired by Michael McCaffrey, who opposes marriage equality but activists expect the bill will survive the committee’s consideration.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee has said he will sign the bill. And Chafee helped to push the bill along by predicting he’d veto a competing idea that would have put marriage equality up for a public referendum. State Sen. Frank Ciccone has proposed doing just that and is hoping to gain traction needed for his alternative.

    LET’S DO THIS, RHODE ISLAND!
